FAQ
Common questions.
If your question is not answered here, please phone us. A knowledgeable member of our team will talk things through with you, with no obligation or pressure to book.

How do I know it is the right time?+
Most families describe a feeling of "more bad days than good". If your pet is no longer eating with interest, struggles to get up, has lost the things they used to enjoy, or you find yourself watching them constantly, it is worth a conversation. We can talk you through a quality-of-life assessment and you can decide from there. There is no pressure to book.
How does an at-home visit work?+
A vet arrives at the time you booked, sits with you for as long as you need, and explains exactly what will happen. Two injections, given gently. The first is a sedative so your pet drifts to sleep, the second stops the heart peacefully. Your pet stays in the place they are most comfortable, with the people they love.
How much does it cost?+
Our pricing is on the pricing page in clear, plain language. There are no surprise fees, and the price we agree on the call is the price you pay. We separate the visit fee from any aftercare you choose so you can see what you are paying for.
Can you come the same day?+
Many families contact us when they need a same-day visit, and we can usually help. Once you have spoken with one of our team, we aim to secure a vet and offer a suitable appointment time within 20 minutes. If we cannot help, we will let you know quickly so you have time to make other arrangements.
What if my pet deteriorates before my appointment?+
If your pet deteriorates before your appointment, you can contact us between 8am and 8pm, 7 days a week, and if appropriate we will try to bring your appointment forward. If you need other assistance, please contact your usual veterinary practice first as they know your pet and hold the clinical records. If you cannot reach them or they do not provide out-of-hours support, Vets at Home offer 24/7 care via our partner Vets Now. You can find your nearest branch by clicking "I need an emergency vet" at https://www.vets-now.com. They will provide telephone triage and, where clinically indicated, in-person examination and treatment at your nearest branch.
What happens after the visit?+
After the vet's visit, you can choose burial on land you own, or cremation through one of our trusted local partners. Cremation can be private, where ashes are returned to you, usually within 48 hours, or companion (communal), where ashes are not returned. If you would like us to arrange aftercare, one call is all that is needed and everything is in place for you.
Do you cover my area?+
We cover most of the UK, with local vets in cities across England. Use the locations page to check coverage by postcode, or phone us, if we do not cover your area directly we can usually point you to a colleague who does.
Can my children be present?+
Yes, if that feels right for your family. Many families find it helps children to be there for the goodbye and to see how peaceful it is. We will explain things at their level if they want us to. There is no right answer here, only what works for you.
What if my pet is anxious around strangers?+
We are used to it. Anxious pets are part of why home visits exist. The vet will let your pet approach in their own time, often work from the floor or where the pet is settled, and use a sedative first so the second injection is given when they are completely relaxed.
