The Good Life Plan

A living plan for the life they love, and the goodbye you would want them to have one day.

Start it while your pet is well. Fill in as much or as little as you like. Keep it, change it, share it with your vet. It does not commit you to anything, and it does not cost anything.

Free, with no sign-up. Opens in your browser. Read it there or save a copy.

If your pet is unwell now and you would rather talk it through with someone, we are here. Call 0333 009 0883. Or take our free Quality of Life Assessment, which takes about three minutes.

Why we made it

At Vets at Home, we have helped thousands of pet parents through one of the hardest parts of loving an animal: knowing when and how to say goodbye.

One thing we see again and again is how difficult it can be to think or talk about the end of a pet’s life. It can feel too sad, too soon, or simply like something we would rather think about another day.

But when we do not think about these things until our pet is already very unwell, important decisions can end up being made in a rush, at a time when emotions are high and it is hard to think clearly.

In our research, almost three in four pet parents who had been through a loss told us they would value being able to record their wishes in advance, so that if the time ever came, they would already have thought about what mattered to them.

That is why we created The Good Life Plan.

It is not about deciding when it is time to say goodbye. And it certainly is not only for elderly or poorly pets.

It is a place to think about what makes your pet’s life a good life, what matters to you if their health ever changes, the things you would still love to do together and, one day, what you would want their goodbye to look and feel like.

What is in the plan

  • What makes their life a good life

The ordinary things that make them happiest, so you can notice if they change.

  • If they ever became seriously unwell

What would matter to you about treatment, written down while you have time to think.

  • Knowing when things are changing

The signs you would look for, and a place to keep Quality of Life results over time.

  • Our life together

The things you would still love to do, and the things you never want to forget.

  • If one day it is time to say goodbye

Where, who, what would help them feel safe, and what would happen afterwards.

  • Just in case

Your vet, your nearest out-of-hours hospital and your preferred home provider, all in one place for a hard night.

This is your plan

There is no right way to complete it. Start wherever feels right. Complete it in any order. Fill in as much or as little as you want. Skip anything you do not want to think about yet. You do not even need to finish it.

Save it. Change it whenever you like. Come back to it over the years. Your pet will change and your thoughts may change too. That is exactly why this is a living plan, rather than something you complete once and forget.

You can download it and share it with your vet, your family or anybody else involved in your pet’s care. You do not have to use Vets at Home.

And if you ever do need us, you can choose to share your plan with us, so you do not have to begin thinking about everything from scratch at a difficult time.

Prefer to do it online?

You can fill in the plan in your browser right now. Your answers save on your device as you go, nothing you write is sent to us, and you can download a finished plan with your pet’s name on it whenever you like.

The online plan can also be saved to your email address, so you can come back to it on any device without a password. If you would rather have it on paper, leave your email and we will give you the printable plan straight away. That is all we will send.

We will not add you to a mailing list. Privacy notice

Questions you might have

Is it really free?

Yes. There is nothing to buy and nothing to sign up for. The printable plan is a PDF you can open, print or save.

Do I have to use Vets at Home?

No. The plan is yours. Share it with whoever is involved in your pet’s care. If you ever do want our help, sharing it with us is a choice you make, not something that happens automatically.

Is it only for older pets?

No. Pets can become ill or injured at any age. Starting while your pet is well is exactly the point, and most of the plan is about their life now, not the end of it.

What happens to what I write?

In the printable version, nothing leaves your kitchen table. In the online version, your answers are saved in your browser on your own device, nothing you write is sent to Vets at Home, and you can download your plan or delete it from your device at any time.

I think my pet might be near the end now. What should I do?

Please do not wait for a plan. Call your vet, or call us on 0333 009 0883, and we will help you work out what to do today. Our free Quality of Life Assessment can also help you put words to what you are seeing.

The Good Life Plan sits alongside The Last Kindness, our free guide to letting go, and our Quality of Life Assessment. All three are free, and none of them commits you to anything.

If you need help today, call 0333 009 0883.
